Sportlethen: Community Sports Hub, Weekly Activity Schedule

NEW SPORTS HUB TO BE LAUNCHED
Click here for information about the initiative to create Community Sports Hubs.

A new sports organisation is being launched on Saturday 13 August which could benefit local clubs and organisations, including those in Newtonhill.

The Portlethen Community Sports Hub - branded "Sportlethen" - is an association of progressive sports clubs in the Portlethen area who are joining forces to enhance sporting opportunities.

Sports hubs are a result of a community-based initiative by sportscotland, the country’s national agency for sport. Aberdeenshire Council staff have been instrumental in setting up the hub. Community sports hubs benefit from funding, including from the National Lottery. Any sports club can join the local hub, which in time is hoped to achieve charitable status. To date clubs involved in numerous sports including football, hockey, Sooyang do, Rebel PT Bootcamps, bowling and badminton have become members, to name but a few. Newtonhill Bowling Club, Newtonhill and Cammachmore football clubs and Newtonhill Boys Club have attended meetings.

The partnership approach will provide support to smaller or newer clubs, or anyone hoping to set up a new sports club in the area. The hub will act as a central information point for those seeking information on sporting opportunities in the area.

Sportlethen's launch date will coincide with the Portlethen Gala, and work is in progress for the various clubs to demonstrate their sports as part of the gala events at Portlethen Academy, in the hope of attracting more people to sporting activity.

Sportlethen secretary Alice McAra said: "We would like to thank sportscotland and the Portlethen Gala committee for their essential support. I would encourage any existing sports clubs in the area, or those interested in setting up a new club, to join the Sportlethen initiative."
